Aim High – Nelson Central School 125

Nelson Central School has a proud heritage in the story of Nelson City, as was told in the school’s 1978 centennial history written by author Maurice Gee. This sequel was written for the school’s 125th celebration and school reunion in 2003. Ironically, the book starts with the end of an era – the relocation of the infant department from Tasman Street to the main Nile Street campus, a difficult decision at the time but one which finally brought the entire school population together for the first time. It canvasses the establishment of two whanau classes and then Maori immersion education, the fostering of mainstream education, co-operative teaching, the arrival of computers into the classroom, and the introduction of international students.
